Taking a Break from Gel Manicures for Healthier Nails
After my two-week trip to Brazil, I came back in dire need of a manicure. I tried to remember the last time I actually removed my nail polish—and honestly, I couldn’t. It’s probably been over three years. So, I decided to cut my nails short and give them a much-needed break from constant gel manicures.
In my personal experience, gel has always been beneficial—my nails grow fast and strong with it. But over time, I’ve noticed a thinning in my nails, especially since salons started drilling off gel polish instead of soaking it. I’m not sure why this change happened—my guess is it’s faster and helps reduce wait times—but it’s definitely taken a toll on my nail health.
I’ve always been curious about doing my nails at home, especially after learning more about the toxic ingredients found in many polishes, like formaldehyde and other harsh chemicals. After just one week without any nail polish, I can already tell that my nails feel healthier and stronger.
That said, I do love having my nails done and painted, so I’ve started looking into cleaner, safer alternatives. I used to go to Emily Day Spa in Reston, Virginia. While it’s a bit of a drive and on the pricier side, I really appreciate that they use non-toxic products—and the salon doesn’t have that overwhelming chemical smell.
Now, I’m officially starting my at-home nail care journey. I’ll be linking the products I’m using below, including some great non-toxic nail polish brands. One amazing find has been a company called Bare Hands. They offer a kit for people who want to keep their nails bare but still groomed and glossy—no polish needed. The kit includes everything you need to cut, file, and add a natural gloss to your nails.
Stay tuned as I share my favorite products, tips, and progress in this new nail care chapter!
